We were on the subject of heart disease. My professor posed the question:

"why is there much more focus on breast cancer than heart disease than women even though heart disease is so much more common in women?" (this is especially true in the older generation when most physicians were male)

No one was able to answer the question. Finally he told us simply:

"Men are more concerned with the women's breasts than they are with their heart"

Aisan girls + insecurity = clinginess, neediness

Asian guys + insecurity = excessive cockiness

Why Asians? is it cultural? biological (we are smaller than others...)? or historical?

*Disclaimer: No offense intended. This observation is just a general trend out there, and I'm not saying that others do not have insecurity issues. We are all human, and we are all self critical to some extent.

Spring 2009 Accessories Report

Spr09 Runway shows have long been over. The clothes were mediocre and all together not suited or anywhere near practical for today's sulky economy. Though you can't really blame the designers since the stock market dip happened during the shows. But I can guarantee that the next season would definately reflect the shift in economy and have a lot more sensible clothes that one could wear more than once.

So I'm focusing on the accessories instead. These weren't anywhere near wearable for the everyday normal person either, but at least they are artfully interesting. For Spring designers looked toward the future. These accessories are eccentric and space-age-looking, many incorporated largely unconventional materials. Check them out:

Easy Job after Graduation

Looks like it's gonna be real easy for me to find a "nice" job after graduation. Every pharmaceutical company's hiring like crazy, even as the economy goes down. I guess people gots to have their meds...
However, the question is, do I want to work as a research scientist? I swore off academic labs indefinitely, but corporate labs might be better...or not.

I actually want to do more of a design/art related job before I go to Med School. It would be my last chance to do such a thing, before I am grounded for life in the scientific realm. But where to find such a job? the pay would probably be pretty low as well..

I don't know what to do

Liu wen's a veteran on Chinese runways, but she just broke out into international fashion scene this season. She surpasses Hye Park and all the other asian models. Actually she's the only non-ethnic looking Asian model out there...no squinty eyes, cherry lips etc...which is why i like her
And she has such a cool vibe - a great portrayal of modern self-made Chinese women

I was looking through some of my old Xanga entries and wasting time, and I came upon my May 18, 2006 entry (yeah mad old) where I had just transferred to UMass and was asking people where I should dorm. Here are their replies:

mary lyons, crabtree and kownlton is part of a bigger residential area called northeast. so many asians live there. sometimes, it looks like a chinatown.

Dear Facebook,

I will have to shut you out of my life indefinitely. You have wasted me too much time. My carelessness in monitoring scandalous photos, info, etc on my page has gotten me into me into too much trouble. My superiors have approached me about material regarding my facebook page more than once (one even went to the extent of checking out my blog pages!). That's when I started cracking down and double checking on my privacy settings, which I was stubid enough not to have done already. However, now you have became much too complicated and there are too many crevices in which internet prowlers can come through.

So, in 24 hours, Sharon's Fb will be gone. Of course, pragmatically, this cannot last forever, but I just want to see how long I can survive without you.

I really have not been taking care of myself at all this semester - physically, emotionally, or psychologically.

It's mostly because I've been so busy. Maybe I should shut myself in my room for a day like Ying and have a lot of self-reflective thinking.

I wish I could just through school and work out the window and go to Europe alone by myself, where I don't know anyone, and just let myself go. Let go of all self-inhibitions, and enjoy life like there is no tomorrow. I would go anywhere I like, and meet new friends that I'll never see again, and try crazy things with them that I would never do (skinny-dipping anyone?)...oh of course there's the nude beach as well. I could be Lucia in that spanish movie. I would not care if I become broke. I would packpack anywhere.

It is a place where time has no meaning, where I can relax bathing in the remaining rays of the sun at dust with the tide nipping at my naked toes, savoring the passage of time rather than dreading it.

The next day would find me wearing a white eyelet day dress with a sunhat and matching sandals, sitting at a quaint cafe being mesmerized by the crisp serenade of a solo Spanish guitarist, and dipping my vanilla hazelnut biscotti into a steamy cup of dark roast coffee. I would browse local bookstores and find vintage little treasures, talk and laugh aloud with the locals, and be subject to their generous hospitality. I would not know where tomorrow brings, nor would I worry or even think about it. Tomorrow would only be tomorrow.

Would that not be a great vaccation? I would get to cleanse myself of stress and negative thoughts and apprehension. I am too young to waste my youth dwindling in Amherst, a town for retirees.

1st day of Organic Chem lab today. It wasn't too bad. I hate how its all basically busy work though. Luckily i managed to get out 1hr early. I was THE 1st person out of the door I think lol. That goes to explain how much I hate labs

My pimples seem to be subsiding at last...about time! It must be because I run regularly now (for the last 2 days at least), or less stress/anxiety, or maybe I'm eating more healthy?

A friend recently asked me why I'm always so happy and smiling all the time, I must be high or something. lol I don't know...maybe I'm high on life? Funny how much I've changed since high school. I hated life back then and was dark and brooding. Now I'm happy ...all without antidepressants! I think it's because I appreciate all my wonderful friends and family a lot more.

Like what the old people say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade (except that I would suggest enjoying the lemons au natural [no sugar added please], or be creative and make lemon chiffon cake )

Nicholas Epley and Erin Whitchurch described experiments in which people were asked to identify pictures of themselves amid a lineup of distracter faces. Participants identified their personal portraits significantly quicker when their faces were computer enhanced to be 20 percent more attractive. They were also likelier, when presented with images of themselves made prettier, homelier or left untouched, to call the enhanced image their genuine, unairbrushed face. Such internalized photoshoppery is not simply the result of an all-purpose preference for prettiness: when asked to identify images of strangers in subsequent rounds of testing, participants were best at spotting the unenhanced faces.

How can we be so self-delusional when the truth stares back at us? “Although we do indeed see ourselves in the mirror every day, we don’t look exactly the same every time,” explained Dr. Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. I'm having fun this summer.
I feel guilty for having this much fun

For the first time I've been slacking like crazy at work...i don't know if it's a good time to do that. After all, I'll need a letter of recommendation from my professor.

I think I'll let fate take me wherever it wants to. If I don't get into med school maybe it's the way it's supposed to be. I'll probably be happier that way anyway

I guess I'll just keep on having fun while I can. Because next semester is gonna be bull

Balenciaga '09 Resort Highlights

I hated the majority of the Resort Collections this year. With all the extra "pre-fall" and "resort" shows, designers are saturated in their creativity. Even the most ingenious ones are probably out of ideas. Since fashion is largely about the $$$$$ now days, it's unlikely that they will ever take away the extra "seasons" (they might even add more :/...
But anyway, the only Resort collection that struck as being both wearable and chic and awesome is Balenciaga. then again, when does Nicolas Ghesquiere ever go wrong?
